Dr. Seuss Character Admits: "I Still Don't Like That Sam-I-Am"
(email to a friend)

SPRINGFIELD, MA - The book "Green Eggs And Ham" by Dr. Seuss tells the tale of a determined character named Sam trying to entice another character to try green eggs and ham. In the end, the two characters are shown with their arms around each other, and Sam receives warm gratitude for introducing the other character to this culinary delight. But that is not the whole story.

"I never liked him. At all. Ever. It wasn't about ham, it was about Sam," said the character in the book that initially did not like green eggs and ham. "Look at this! I don't even have a name! I have many more lines in the book, but he has a name. Do you know what the kids call me? 'Green eggs and ham hater' That's my name to the tikes that read the book. Am I jealous of Sam with his name and his little signs? You bet I am."

"He's just this guy in a book, you know? He didn't like the food, but his tastes did grow. He tried them, he liked them, that was good. He ought to like me, too, he should," said his costar, Sam. "He doesn’t like me, does he now? Does he know me? I don't see how. He never listens, only talks. I offer a snack, and off he walks."

"That sing-song stuff nearly drove me nuts," said the character. "That's another thing. Sam seemed to be born to talk that way. I kept tripping over it all. I suggested we publish an outtakes book!" he said laughing. "I guess it's really just a lot of things, maybe I'm just blaming Sam because he fits in so well and I don't. Sometimes between takes he'd sit down with the fox and they'd run through all the things that Tweedle Beetle's did. Did I not join in because I hated it, or because I just couldn't do it?"

The melancholy interview comes on the heels of the new Cat in the Hat movie, in theaters this weekend. "Don't even get me started on the Cat," said the character.

"I don't know what he's grousing about, I have no name, but I'm no lout," said the Cat in the Hat, "He signed his contract, he worked, he was paid. If he now doesn't like it, he can lump it. In spades."
